La fibrilación auricular (FA) es en la actualidad la arritmia sobre la que más literatura científica se genera anualmente. Este interés científico se debe a diferentes motivos, entre los cuales están la persistencia del desconocimiento de su mecanismo y su a menudo difícil manejo. Sin embargo, probablemente el mayor factor para el interés que despierta esta arritmia es su alta prevalencia y el gran impacto clínico y de coste que acarrea. En este artículo se revisan la repercusión de la FA en términos de epidemiología y de impacto clínico y económico

At present, atrial fibrillation is the arrhythmia that generates the more clinical scientific studies as per year. This scientific interest arises from different reasons, including the persistent ignorance over its mechanism and its often difficult handling. However, probably the most important factor to this interest is its high prevalence and the clinical and economic impact it entails. This article reviews the atrial fibrillation’s repercussions in terms of epidemiology and clinical/economic impact.
